Technical Help Please

I'd appreciate some technical help. I want to download some DV tapes to my computer and do some simple edits etc., before burning to a DVD. Any ideas about how to do this and the best software to use, good tips etc., gratefully received. Thanks.

Firstly, are you using Windows? Secondly, have you got a Firewire port on your machine? If so, just get a cable and import the video direct from the camcorder using Windows Movie Maker, which is also a good basic editing package.

Thanks Louis, that was quick! Firewire eh? Dunno, not sure what they look like.
You'll have to forgive me, I'm a 1/4" jack and phono plug man myself; I learnt tape splicing at my father's knee - but digital editing is new to me.
I'll go to the computer shop tomorrow and see what they want to sell me. And yes, I'm using Windows, despite losing my cherry to an Apple in the mid Eighties.

Is it a laptop or a desktop? The pics on here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FireWire - give you an idea of what to look for. If you've got that, you can capture MiniDV straight from the camera with no video capture card. You might find that you have all you need already.
